How to create and link Printer Groups

In this article, we’ll walk through how to create printer groups, their purpose, and how to link them to POS terminals.

Printer groups allow you to categorise POS products based on where you would like the dockets to print. For example, if a customer orders a latte, the docket should print at the printer closest to the coffee machine where the latte is made. In this case, you would create a printer group named "Coffee" or "Barista" and assign this group to all relevant POS products to ensure the product is allocated the correct printer. Printer groups allow POS Terminals to decipher which product needs to be printed from which printer.

Create a Printer Group

To create a printer group, start by navigating to Settings> Printer Groups, then select + New Group. Enter a name that best reflects the grouping of products.

Note: We recommend keeping printer groups simple and broad. Their purpose is to direct product groupings to the appropriate printers, not to categorise your products.

If you’d like to organise products by category, this can be done in Operations > Product Categories.

Assign POS products a Printer Group

Next, you’ll need to assign the printer group to each product that fits that group. For example, you might link the product Latte to the Coffee Machine printer group, ensuring the order is matched to the correct printer near the coffee station for preparation.

Allocate a Printer Group to a POS terminal login

The final step is to allocate printers to the printer groups within the POS terminal. To do this, go to Settings > Logins, filter the type by POS Terminal, and select the relevant terminal. Make sure each printer group is assigned to its corresponding printer.

This step is only required if the POS terminal is selling items associated with specific printer groups. For example, if a terminal is used for admissions only and doesn’t handle food and beverage sales, you can leave the printer group assignments blank.

Same product two printers?

You can also assign different printers to the same printer group across different POS terminals. A common use case for this is when you have two cafe tills in separate locations—you might want "Counter" products to print at different printers depending on which terminal the order was placed through.

Only one printer?

Alternatively, this setup also works if there is only single printer, this way you can have both printer group items print to the same printer.
